Literary Agent Shows How
I gave Michael Larsen a preview of the Promotion Monkey
newsletter before it was released.
First he said:
"Congrats on starting the newsletter. It has the same strong,
honest, no-nonsense voice of experience I heard in your talk."
Then he said:
"If you've got a salable product or service that you can sell
online, the Web is a gold mine. Karl Palachuk's proven, no-nonsense
advice will help you get your share of the gold. Subscribing to the
newsletter will be like investing in a stock that's guaranteed to
pay large dividends."
I appreciate these comments, especially from someone who is a
published author AND an extremely successful literary agent.
Michael has been a successful writer, agent, and marketeer for more
than thirty years. I can't even count all the books he has authored
or co-authored. Some of my favorites are:
-
Guerrilla Marketing for Writers: 100 Weapons to Help You Sell Your
Work (co-author)
-
How to Write a Book Proposal
-
How to Get a Literary Agent
Michael and his wife, Elizabeth Pomada, have also produced a entire
series of books called
Painted Ladies: San Francisco's Resplendent Victorians, which
highlight the beauty and social significance of Victorian houses in
San Francisco.
That series of books has been going strong for 30 years!
Michael is an interesting character, especially as a literary agent.
First, he's a heckuva nice guy and very approachable. Second, he
lives in San Francisco and not New York or L.A.
Third, Michael is a living example of someone who knows the
difference between promotion and advertising. Michael lives the life
of someone in love with his chosen profession.
Here's what I mean:
Go to the Larsen-Pomada
Literary Agency web site. Now float your mouse over "The Savvy
Author." Click through those links.
What you'll find is a series of free articles that are jam-packed
with great information. How to write a book proposal. How to create
a promotion plan. How to make yourself irresistible.
All free. No strings attached.
In addition, Michael and Elizabeth are extremely active in the
writers community in San Francisco, and statewide. They organize
conferences. They speak at conferences. They make themselves
available.
Why?
Well, partly because they obviously love doing what they're doing.
That's the best "job" in the world. A second part is to be a
resource for writers at every level in hope of stumbling on the next
great book. After all, Michael and Elizabeth are agents. They need
great books to survive.
Third, as the market evolves, everyone with a computer can click out
a bad book and get it printed for less than $10/copy. Michael is
interested in educating authors and keeping standards high. After
all, as someone who has been in the literary world his entire life,
he has a stake in professionalism.
Michael contributes again and again and again, at every level he can
think of. He lives the kind of professional life, and has the kind
of professional success that I plan to highlight in the Promotion
Monkey newsletter.
I'm honored to have Michael's endorsement.
I hope you'll sign up for your subscription on Monday.
